SXSW
 Monday, March 05, 2007

An exciting week is looming here in Austin. Next week is the (in)famous SXSW music festival. There is so much going on, I'm sure you won't be relying on our humble site for event info. But allow me to share Foolhardy's activties that week. We'll be appearing March 13 at the Revolution Room in San Antonio as part of the adjacent SXSA festival. We play at 9pm. Then we'll be at the Copa Club at 3pm on the Ides of March. And finally, we're very excited to be performing Friday, March 16 on a wonderful outdoor stage - that is usually reserved for more traditional music: Guero's Oak Garden in the the heart of Austin's SoCo district. It'll be a red-eye show at 12 noon. Be sure to check our MySpace page for up to the minute info.

A little Foolhardy history
 Friday, December 15, 2006

The debut Foolhardy album was recorded at Low Swing Studios in Berlin - a cozy space in a hidden courtyard on Rosenthaler Platz. The sessions began in July 2003 and lasted until December. We assembled an amazing group of people for the recordings. When I told producer Guy Sternberg that I needed a bassist and drummer, he whipped out his cell phone and hooked me up with two of Berlin's most exciting musicians: On bass Norman Nitzsche from the band Mina and producer of Whitest Boy Alive - and on drums Snorre Schwarz from Di Grine Kuzine. Sandy Koeckeritz from Nena's band lent her silky vocals. Sergio Laguna dropped in a bleeding guitar track. Nimrod Erez boggled the bongos and tambourine. I even recall an afternoon with Parisian jazzman Nicolas Sidi on the keys. Maximilian Hecker stopped by often to cheer us on. We had great sessions, and I can't say enough good things about our producer Guy. He put his heart into the project, and you can hear it on the recordings.

Foolhardy will be taking part at 9pm sharp on Sept. 28 at Momo's in Austin. There will be 8 bands each playing a 25 minute set - and a miraculous 5 minutes between sets. The evening's music will be totally eclectic. Bands advance by a show of audience hands after the set. We'd love to see you waving at us. Tickets are $12 at the door or $10 in advance from us.

I believe in Oklahoma
 Monday, July 31, 2006

Growing up in Oklahoma, there was rarely much to get excited about. The only "rock stars" we could claim were Leon Russell and Dwight Twilley. It looks like times are changing north of the Red River. Check out this article from the Denver Post.

Say hi to Amber
Amber Weeks on vocals is the latest addition to the Foolhardy family. How should I describe her style? Somewhere between Janis Joplin, Nena, and Loretta Lynn sums it up nicely. We're very happy to have her on board! Say hi on myspace.

SXSW all over again
 Monday, March 27, 2006

That was interesting week. Members of Foolhardy were passing out goodie bags during the conference. I was at my post when Michael Ivins strolled in. I couldn't pass up the opportunity to talk a little shop. He remembered chatting with me after a show in Prague in 2003, and he told us about a secret gig that the Lips were playing - which we duly attended in the intimate environs of the Fox & Hound pub.

I also worked on the stage crew for two nights of the festival. On Thursday I did the Morrissey/Goldfrapp show. About 8 other people and I saw Goldfrapp do a 7-song soundcheck. Later, everyone was milling about outside when Morrissey pulled up in a big, blue BMW sedan and elegantly strode toward his dressing room - smiling all the way. Oh yeah, he also put on a brilliant show. What a performer.

On Friday I worked stage crew for the British Music Showcase at the Blender Bar. For me, the highlights of the evening were Brakes (who would please any Clash fan) - and KT Tunstall (great songs, great voice, and an amazing band).

Then I slept for three days...

Foolhardy on the radio

We recently received a very friendly email from Arthur Conley, AKA Mr. Bubble, informing us that he will be including a Foolhardy track on his next Mr. Bubble Wonder Hour show. The next live broadcast takes place Feb. 23 at 8:00pm CST. That's 3:00am for you folks in Europe. The podast is available here. Thanks for spinning our music Mr. Bubble!

"White Trash Rain" video now online
 Thursday, January 19, 2006

The new music video for "White Trash Rain" can be viewed by clicking in the yellow box to the right. Austin filmmaker Matthew Fliehler directed and edited the clip. Fliehler, who also made a video for my former band Pompeii V, is known for his gritty, Super 8 style - a particularly effective approach for capturing the urban flavor of Austin-Soco. We hope you enjoy the vid. Be sure to let Mr. Fliehler know what you think about his work.

He bangs the drums
 Tuesday, January 17, 2006

Serious musicians can be foolish too. Please say hello to Stephen P. Bidwell. Steve involuntarily left his home in New Orleans last year, spent a few months in NYC, and has now landed in Austin. To our delight, he has found himself caught in the Foolhardy tractor beam. He's a grad student in jazz peformance, so watch out!

White Trash on celluloid
 Tuesday, November 01, 2005

Austin filmmaker Matthew Fliehler has just completed the new video clip for the Foolhardy anthem "White Trash rain." Fliehler regularly works as a crew member on Robert Rodriguez and Richard Linklater projects. Out of sheer white trash loyalty, he has lent his talents to create a Super 8 paparazzi montage that submerges viewers in the sweaty underbelly of the Live Music Capital. Look for the quicktime version at this website in the near future.

"Gravity" makes the cut
 Tuesday, September 06, 2005

The Foolhardy track "Gravity" has been named a finalist in the Free-Fall Songwriting Contest. Five songs were chosen by industry pros to compete for top honors. The big winner will be determined by a vote of music fans from around the world. Visit Musicians Resource to cast your vote.

Field trip
 Tuesday, August 02, 2005

Last Friday we went to a NARAS recording workshop at the Austin City Limits studio. Recording guru Al Schmitt hosted the session. It was informative to hear about his technique, but truly spellbinding to hear his stories. This guy has worked with a laundry list of hall-of-famers - and seen sides of artists that we never know about. It's good to be in Austin.

Help arrives
 Monday, July 25, 2005

I've been hiding out in the studio the last few weeks. Laying down some preliminary tracks and getting some arrangements together. Just when the bass was beginning to be missed, Carissa has arrived - rig and all. In fact, we're heading in tonight to fill in some badly needed bottom end.

. . .
Austin it is
 Saturday, July 02, 2005

It's been a while in the making, but Foolhardy headquarters has officially relocated to Austin, Texas. Lap steel master David Henderson is in New York City for the summer. Andy Parrott is somewhere in North America playing with the indubitable Public Property. Carissa and Lori? We think Tate is somewhere downtown.

Last Iowa show until September!
 Monday, June 13, 2005

The band will perform tommorow June 14 at the Green Room as an opener for Cloud Cult. We'll hit the stage at 9:45 pm. A few days later we're headed south to Austin, Texas to begin working on the next studio album. You won't be able to see the band this far north again until the Mud River Music Festival in September, so come out and have a beer with the band after the show.

. . .
Thank you!
 Thursday, June 09, 2005

On behalf of the band, I would like to thank all of you who made our video premiere evening such a pleasure. Very special thanks go to Seth Camillo for his extraordinary efforts in producing a beautiful piece of work and to Emily for supplying the pro screening equipment. We look forward to seeing many of you again June 14 at the Green Room. It will be our last Iowa show until September.

World premiere of "Gravity" video
 Monday, June 06, 2005

Tomorrow night is the big video premiere at the Mill. This is exciting for us too, because no one but the master director Seth Camillo has seen the final version. We'll screen it at 7:30 and play afterwards. We look forward to having the bombastic Wolff Twins join us on stage for a rendition of an all-time favorite. This is one of our rare early shows, so come out and have a great dinner and some cheap Guinness. Admission is free!

. . .
Three cheers to Seth Camillo for creating such an amazing work of art with the video for Foolhardy's "Gravity!" I was very impressed by the interesting video footage and eye-catching colors. Bravo, mate! Well done. :-)

Music video premiere + show
 Saturday, May 21, 2005

The music video for "Gravity" is in the can. Director Seth Camillo has created a stunning piece of work. I don't want to reveal the content just yet - but I'll say that when the band first saw it, our chins hit the floor.

Please join us for the official premiere June 7 at the Mill. It's a free dinner show. There will be a screening at 7:00 pm, followed by a full set from the band.

 Friday, May 13, 2005

The first Foolhardy music video is nearly complete. Director Seth Camillo has been toiling away in his basement editing room for weeks and has emerged with some cold-blooded imagery for the track "Gravity." The clip will be available here soon.

CD review
 Friday, March 25, 2005

Returned from Austin to find the weather 40 degrees colder and a very kind review from Kent Williams in the latest issue of Little Village (Iowa City's news & culture magazine). Here's a smidgen:

"The music has a surface sheen of polite conventionality, but something dark and sad roils underneath.... The real suprise after repeated listens, is that while Foolhardy sounds almost studied in its pursuit of a radio-ready, commercial sound, it has a certain plain-faced, guileless innocence, even given the bleakness of the lyrics. What Cheryl Crow, or Counting Crows, or Blink 182, are trying to simulate, Foolhardy is doing for real."

Hey Kent, can I buy you a drink?

Streets of Austin
 Sunday, March 20, 2005

We had an excellent time yesterday in the Texas sunshine, strolling from stage to stage checking out lots of great music. They have an interesting way of generating a crowd at shows here: free beer. I can tell you. It works.

Walking down South Congress, we ran into Doug Roberson and Jim Viner of Bent Scepters. And in the notorious Austin Alleyway, I bumped into an old friend of mine from Tulsa, photographer Mel Lee. For me, the musical highlight of the day was a band called Laika and the Cosmonauts. Finnish guys who play surf music. They have some really cool, moody instrumentals, and their drummer was slapping me around with his incredible precision. I'm liking Austin...

Austin shines on Foolhardy
 Friday, March 18, 2005

Pulled into town last night. Enjoying the hospitality of supergrip Matthew Fliehler. He just finished work as a crew member on Sin City and has lots of tales from the set. I visited Arlyn Studios this morning, where I apparently missed Robert Plant by only a few days. Cruising around the city, there is a palpable buzz in the warm spring air. Music is everywhere. SXSW is underway, and there are performances in parking lots, on sidewalks, in shops, and anywhere else with 8 square feet and an extension cord. Is this paradise?

. . .
Foolhardy representin' at SXSW
 Monday, March 14, 2005

We'll be headed south later this week. Not only to accelerate the onset of spring, but also to hobnob at the South by Southwest music conference in Austin, Texas. We're looking forward to hearing lots of exciting new music and meeting other musicians from across the globe. I'll be doin' some real downhome Texas bloggin', so check back.

Rockin' the Midwest airwaves
Thanks once again to Bob Dorr at KUNI for featuring a Foolhardy track. He spun "The cruelest month" last Friday evening on his show. I like to think of Bob as Iowa's very own version of John Peel - always willing to provide new artists with access to the airwaves.

Song background: White Trash rain
 Thursday, February 10, 2005

You may be wondering what the hell "White Trash rain" means. And rightly so - unless you've spent time in Berlin lately. In addition to the socio-economic imagery, White Trash Fast Food is also the name of a groovy hangout in Berlin-Mitte. It happens to be where Guy Sternberg and I first crossed paths. The title refers to the evening trek - often in the lovely northern European rain - down to the White Trash.

. . .
Bon Voyage!
 Monday, February 07, 2005

The Foolhardy crew would like to wish Kelly Pardekooper and band a safe and successful journey. Our musical compatriots are embarking tomorrow on a month-long tour of Germany and the Netherlands. Check the site for dates: kellyp.net.

Foolhardy on Shady Radio

More good news from the airplay front. Beginning next week Foolhardy will enter rotation at the online broadcaster Shady Radio, a very interesting web project from Levy Multimedia. Thanks to Bob Dorr at KUNI
 Saturday, February 05, 2005

Heartfelt thanks to Bob Dorr at KUNI. Last night he spun "Gravity" on his show and offered some kind words about the Foolhardy project. And he didn't even demand payola. Maybe there is hope after all for working musicians.

Mastered tracks now online
 Thursday, February 03, 2005

The mastered tracks are now available for your enjoyment. Mastering evens out the levels between songs, so you don't have to adjust volume from track to track. It also raises the overall output by elimining peaks that are basically inaudible to the human ear. Join the news list or re-enter your email address for access to the CD-quality downloads.

Insomnia Radio podcast
 Wednesday, February 02, 2005

One of the first and fastest growing podcasters is Insomnia Radio. Thanks to chief insomniac Jason Evangelho,
Foolhardy will soon be sedating sleepless iPod users across the globe. More details next week.

Unmastered tracks
 Tuesday, February 01, 2005

Up to now, unmastered versions of the tracks have been available for download here at the site. In a few days they will be replaced by the mastered files. The mastering was done by Guy Sternberg in Berlin. It's interesting to hear the difference. The stereo effect is wider, and some of the neighbor-busting bass tone is reigned in. The audiophiles among you may want both versions, so download 'em as soon as you can.

. . .
On stage
 Thursday, January 27, 2005

As part of the Mud River music series, Foolhardy will play a set at the Green Room in Iowa City on Wednesday, February 16 at 9:00 p.m. Working our way through these cold winter nights...

. . .
Lyrical info
Several Foolhardy tracks borrow inspiration from some lyrical heavyweights. You'll find allusions to William Blake, T.S. Eliot, Bill Shakespeare, even the venerable Noel Gallagher. And yes, a surly reference to Bob Marley.

. . .
The Foolhardy crew
 Wednesday, January 26, 2005

The Foolhardy project consists of a large cast of characters. We are spread around the globe and participate to varying degrees, depending on the circumstances. Our current live constellation is drawn from a pool of fine musicians. Sometimes we do a power trio, and sometimes we have something more like a southern rock family affair. Check out the new gallery pix to eyeball the group: Michael Hardy (strat, vox), Carissa Ries (bass, vox), Tate Durlam (skins), Dave Henderson (strat, lap steel), Andy Parrott (les paul, vox), and Kelsey Ford (vox, tamborine). John Kazmerzak of Protostarr recently sat in on the Juno synthie. More later on the Berlin studio crew...

On the radio
 Tuesday, January 25, 2005

Foolhardy will enter evening rotation on KUNI Friday evening, February 4. I am curious about which track(s) they will select. If you want to encourage this kind of thing, you can shoot an email to Bob (Robert.Dorr@uni.edu) or Al (Al.Schares@uni.edu). Thanks for listening.
